FAQs – The Feldenkrais Method & Argentine Tango

Trying something new comes often with a bunch of questions. I hope this collection of FAQs answers most of them.

FAQs – The Feldenkrais Method

Some frequently asked questions when teaching The Feldenkrais Method:

How to best set up for online Feldenkrais classes

In the current situation many exercise classes have been moved online and helped us to stay at home to save lives. But suddenly turning your own home into a fitness or yoga studio might create some problems. To help my Feldenkrais students to get the most out of my online classes I have created the following list of tips: How to best set up for online exercise classes. Those can be equally applied when getting ready for other workout classes too like Pilates, Yoga, Alexander, Fitness, seated exercises and Zumba.

What should I wear for a Feldenkrais class?

Chose comfortable warm clothes which allow you to move freely. Layers are good.
In many Feldenkrais classes you will do slow and small movements. Even in a warm room you might get a bit cold.

Do I need to bring some special equipment to a Feldenkrais class?

Not really. If you can please bring: a (yoga)mat and blanket, some water and curiosity.
Moving Experience has a small amount of yoga mats and blankets for those who don’t have their own (yoga) mat and blanket yet. Best to check with your Feldenkrais teacher.

How long is a Feldenkrais group class?

In general a class is between 45-60 minutes long. Allow some time afterwards to settle.
Diving into the world of sensation and self awareness can be very tiring or energizing. It differs from person to person and from lesson to lesson. Just make sure you plan enough time afterwards for your way home.
Moving Experience allows you some time after the classes so you don’t need to rush out.

Is a Feldenkrais class suitable for 60 plus?

YES absolutely! No one is too old to learn something new!
In the Feldenkrais work we are using small gentle movements to improve your self awareness. You improve the way you move now and (re)gain comfort and ease no matter what your age. If some movements are difficult you simply do them in your imagination.
A lot of the classes are on the floor and your Feldenkrais teacher will make it easy for you to get down and to come up again. It will get easier each time anyway.
Moving Experience is offering seated online classes in case the floor isn’t easy accessible for you.

Is Feldenkrais for men too?

YES. The Feldenkrais classes will help you no matter what age or gender you are.
The Feldenkrais Method is about learning and your gender, age, profession or nationality doesn’t matter as long as you are open minded and curious you can benefit from it.

FAQs – Argentine Tango

What should I wear for a Tango class?

There is no dress-code. Wear comfortable clothes which allows you to move freely.
It’s so simple like that. ?

What kind of shoes should I wear?

In the beginning light outdoor shoes with smooth non-grip soles are good. They should fit tightly around your foot.
Another good option is to bring 1-2 extra pairs of thick socks. Dancing in socks helps to feel the floor and to loosen the fear of hurting each other in case you would step onto each others toes. ? ?

Do I need to bring a dance partner?

NO you don’t have to bring a dance partner to Moving Experience’s tango classes.
In the tango classes I encourage to swap partners to enhance the learning process so no one has to sit out.

Am I to old to learn Argentine Tango?

No one is too old to learn to dance. As long as you can walk alone you can learn to walk together in an embrace.
Learning a new skill will keep you on your toes and has several benefits. It might take a bit longer but as long as you bring your curiosity and a positive attitude the tango will embrace you.

Do I have to remember long sequences?

NO. Dancing Argentine Tango socially is improvisation to music. You’ll learn small patterns to navigate on the dance floor.
Starting this way opens up the possibilities of freedom of improvisation to the music and within the constraints of the social dance floor. I especially focus on the body awareness and the quality of the movement so that the communication in the couple becomes clear and the embrace comfortable.

Can I learn Tango with two left feet?

YES. As long as you are curious and open to learn you will be surprised what dancing can do to your life.

Do I need to be flexible to dance Argentine Tango?

NO. In social tango you are walking together in an embrace to the music. Posing and acrobatics belong to stage tango.
In my tango classes I focus especially on the body awareness and the quality of the movement so that the communication in the couple becomes clear and the embrace comfortable. That also can influence your flexibility in a positive way.

Does it help to have danced before?

Dancing Argentine Tango is like speaking a (body) language. The first one is the hardest to learn.
Everybody has his own learning curve. Knowing other dances can be helpful but on the other hand strong movement patterns can get in the way of this improvised dance.
Come and start your own tango journey with me.
